Tiffany & Co.
In 1837 Charles Lewis Tiffany and John Young open Tiffany & Young, a stationary and fancy goods emporium in New York City. Not long after their opening the “blue box” is introduced. In 1845 the first Tiffany catalog is published, the nation’s first retail catalog. In 1853 Tiffany assumes control of the company and it is renamed Tiffany & Co. The history of Tiffany & Co. is intertwined with the history of the United States. In 1861, Tiffany was commissioned to produce a presidential pitcher for the Inauguration of President Abraham Lincoln, throughout the Civil War Tiffany supplies the Union Army with swords, flags and surgical tools, Louis Comfort Tiffany collaborates with Thomas Edison to build the first lamp. Louis is also commissioned by great Americans Mark Twain and Cornelius Vanderbilt to build lights, windows and furniture for their homes. In 1885 Tiffany revises the Great Seal of the United States of America which can be seen on the one-dollar bill today. In 1926, the United States accepts the Tiffany standard for platinum purity. In 1950, Truman Capote publishes Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which is later made into a movie starring Audrey Hepburn. In 1967, Tiffany created the Super Bowl Trophy awarded to the victor of the inaugural Super Bowl. In 1968, Tiffany designs china for the White House. In 1987 Tiffany & Co. goes public, on their 150th anniversary. In 2004, Tiffany creates the Nascar Trophy.
